"For the first time in a couple of years we have to start the Davis Cup season on the road which is never easy," said Canadian Davis Cup team captain Martin Laurendeau. "At least this is a city and a venue that several of our team members are familiar with from the Tour event, but the atmosphere is always different for Davis Cup competition." Laurendeau says the team will also have to adjust to a different climate and conditions as they come off the Australian Open. The players for both teams will be selected by their respective captains 10 days prior to the tie. Japan holds a 5-0 record against Canada in Davis Cup play, though the two countries havent faced each other since 1938. Canada is the top-seeded team, ranked No. 7, while Japan is ranked No. 12. The Canadians are coming of their most successful Davis Cup season ever after advancing to the semifinals where they were defeated by top-ranked Serbia. Japan is making its return to the World Group in 2014 after a one year absence. They defeated Colombia 3-2 in their World Group playoff tie in September to advance back into the Top 16.
