CLEVELAND -- Anderson Varejao cant explain how the Cleveland Cavaliers broke their season-high six-game losing streak. Sergio Ramos Jersey . Hes just glad they did. Varejao played a major role, hitting two crucial jumpers in overtime and tying a franchise record with a career-high 25 rebounds to give his struggling team a lift in an 87-81 victory over the Orlando Magic on Thursday night. "I still dont know how we won that game," he said. "It was crazy, but Ill take it." The Cavaliers played without All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, who missed his first game this season because of a bruised left knee. Irving averages a team-high 22.2 points for the Cavaliers, who trailed 78-68 with just over a minute and a half to play. Thanks to crucial Orlando mistakes and some big plays of their own, the Cavaliers tied the game on Dion Waiters layup with 0.6 seconds remaining and dominated the extra session. Varejaos basket with 2:07 remaining in OT put Cleveland ahead 83-81. He added another basket with 1:34 left and hit two free throws with 23.9 seconds remaining to finish with 18 points. "He was a problem for us all night," Orlando coach Jacque Vaughn said. "Hes relentless. Give him credit for going hard the whole game." Varejaos big night was no surprise to his teammates. "We expect that of him," Waiters said. "Hes a rebounding machine." Glen Davis scored 16 points for the Magic, who scored only two points in overtime and couldnt hold the 10-point lead with 1:34 to play in regulation. "We blew it, bottom line," Magic forward Tobias Harris said. "It was a tough, tough loss. The whole game, we thought it was ours. These are the ones we need to win. Very tough loss." A basket by Varejao and two free throws by Waiters made it 79-72 with 50 seconds remaining. Jarrett Jack, starting in place of Irving, cut the lead to 79-75 by hitting three foul shots with 13.9 seconds remaining. After Orlando was called for a 5-second violation trying to inbound the ball, Waiters basket cut the lead to 79-77 with 10.1 seconds left. ETwaun Moore missed two free throws and Cleveland was awarded the ball with 9.3 seconds left after a video review. Waiters took the inbounds pass and drove down the left of the lane to tie the game. Jameer Nelsons 3-point attempt from the corner bounced off the rim and the teams went to overtime. Clevelands last three home games have gone to overtime. Waiters scored 17 points and Tristan Thompson added 16 for the Cavaliers. Nelson scored 14 points for the Magic, while Arron Afflalo and Andrew Nicholson had 12 apiece. Irving felt a "pop" in his knee while driving to the basket in Tuesdays loss to Indiana, but an MRI on Wednesday revealed he only sustained a bruise. Hes listed as day to day. Clevelands next game is Saturday at Brooklyn and the Cavaliers host Indiana on Sunday. "We found a way to win," Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. "It was exciting getting stops instead of trying to outscore everyone. When you allow two points in overtime, youre doing something right. Its great that our guys saw that we dont have to score to win games." Varejao tied the teams single-game rebounding record set by Rick Roberson on March 4, 1972. Magic centre Nikola Vucevic missed the game after spraining his left ankle Tuesday in a 94-81 loss to Golden State. He missed four games with the same injury in early December and is considered day to day. Vucevic is averaging 13.4 points and a team-high 11.1 rebounds. The Cavaliers defeated the Magic 109-100 in Orlando on Dec. 13. Neither team could build a lead in the first half. Cleveland led by five points several times in the first quarter, while Orlando went ahead by six in the second period. Thompsons basket at the buzzer gave the Cavaliers a 41-39 lead at halftime. Orlando is 4-11 on the road. The arena was about half full, thanks to a snowstorm that hit the area. The announced attendance was 14,248. NOTES: Irving watched the game from the bench in a coat and tie. ... Vaughn said before the game he doesnt believe Vucevics injury will linger. "The good news is hes on the trip with us and hes out there working on the court. I dont think this is something to be really worried about." ... Jason Maxiell started in Vucevics spot after having played 33 total minutes in Orlandos previous eight games. ... Cavaliers G Matthew Dellavedova earned a loud ovation for tying up Davis for a jump ball in the second quarter. Dellavedova is 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds while Davis is listed at 6-9 and 289 pounds. Pepe Reina Jersey . -- Desperate to stop Tom Bradys latest comeback bid, the Miami Dolphins sought help from a reserve safety making his NFL debut after being signed Tuesday off the San Francisco 49ers practice squad. Riethers apparent stamp on Manchester United midfielder Adnan Januzaj during Saturdays Premier League match at Craven Cottage was missed by the match officials. A three-man panel of former referees reviewed the incident and all agreed that it was a sending-off offence.NEWARK, N.J. -- After watching the Colorado Avalanche struggle to generate offence for more than 57 minutes, coach Patrick Roy rolled the dice and pulled goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere with 2:30 left in regulation against the New Jersey Devils. The gamble paid off big. PA Parenteau scored with 1:47 left in the third period and Ryan OReilly had a power-play goal 28 seconds into overtime to give the Avalanche a stunning 2-1 victory Monday night. "Why wait?" Roy said after Colorado extended its winning streak to four games and posted its 13th win in 17 games (13-3-1). "Who said we have to pull the goalie with 1 minute in the game. I thought that was the right time and I thought we started generating more offence. I thought they were tired and it was a great window of opportunity there." Once Giguere went to the bench, the Avalanche mounted constant pressure and Parenteau knotted the score by deflecting a shot by defenceman Tyson Barrie past goalie Cory Schneider. That deflated the Devils and their fans. Michael Ryder made a bad play a minute later and defenceman Andy Greene slashed Matt Duchene to prevent a breakaway with 42 seconds left in regulation. The man advantage carried into overtime and OReilly ended it by tipping Duchenes pass by Schneider for his 21st of the season. "Tonight we showed great resilience," OReilly said. "We stuck with it the whole game. That was a big play by PA Parenteau tying the game, and it gave us a ton of momentum going to OT." It marked the third straight game in which New Jersey has given up a late goal to force overtime. The Devils have lost their last two. New Jersey easily could have had a bigger lead, with three shots hitting the post and another stopping on the goal line. "Its unlucky until it keeps happening over and over and over again," coach Pete DeBoer said. "I dont know. I dont know if its unlucky." Fourth-line wing Ryan Carter scored in the first period for New Jersey, which cant afford to keep giving away points if it wants to make the playoffs. "Tonight for me the story is we have to fiind a way to get a second and third goal," DeBoer said. Thiago Alcantara Spain Jersey. "We got a goal from our fourth line, which is a bonus goal. We had enough chances to get five. You let anybody hang around in this league long enough, bad things happen and thats the story lately." Giguere finished with 27 saves in winning for the first time since starting the season 7-0. He also had the iron working for him. "Ill take a little luck now -- I need it," Giguere said. "I did get lucky a few times tonight. We worked hard enough to get the two points at the end." Schneider, who had the NHLs second-best goals-against average (1.91) entering the game, only had to make a few good saves until the final minutes. His best stops came on a chance in close by rookie sensation Nathan MacKinnon in the first period and another in close by OReilly in the third. The Devils goalie also was a little lucky. A third-period power-play shot by Gabriel Landeskog hit off defenceman Bryce Salvador and went just wide of the net. But the Avs finally found the answers late. Carter got his fifth goal of the season on a quick counterattack after Duchene lost the puck at the blue line in the Devils zone. Stephen Gionta carried the puck into the Colorado zone and fed Steve Bernier, who found Carter coming late for a shot that beat Giguere. Given a rare start with Semyon Varlamov getting the night off, Giguere had help from the iron all night. Michael Ryder hit the post with 12:30 left in the first period and Dainius Zubrus deflected a shot by Mark Fayne off the post with 4 seconds left in the period. Zubrus also clanged one off the post on a short-handed shot late in the second period, and Jaromir Jagr had a shot that stopped on the goal line early in the third. NOTES: Devils D Anton Volchenkov missed the game with a lower-body injury sustained against Nashville on Friday night. ... New Jersey activated D Peter Harrold and he was back in the lineup after missing 25 games with a broken foot. ... The Avalanche will play the Rangers, Flyers and Islanders on the road before the Olympic break.
